THAILAND FOLKLORE SHORT STORY: DOI NANG NON - ‘MOUNTAIN OF THE SLEEPING LADY’

'Mountain of The Sleeping Lady' or well known as Doi Nang Non was once a very famous folklore story in Thai. The main legend of this Thai folklore says that there was once a very beautiful young princess who lived happily in her kingdom. One day while she was playing around with her maidens near a river, her handkerchief, a gift from her father fell down the river. She was very upset. Coincidently, there's a huntsman who stopped by the river and take his rest after a long hunt suddenly saw the handkerchief and returned it back to the princess. Both of them falling in love for the first sight and they started to date. After dating for a long period, the huntsman then proposed the princess to marry him and the princess has agreed. Two weeks after the wedding, the queen gets pregnant and the king was so happy to hear the news. He then quickly asked the maidens to spread the news so that his kingdom could celebrate it. One evening while the queen was knitting and accompanied by her dearest husband, she had expressed to the king that she was craving for Aruana fish. The king thought that it was impossible to find Aruana fish in the kingdom but in order to fulfill his beloved wife's wish, he then agreed to hunt for Aruana fish. Before the king left, he had gave a beautiful ring to the queen as a promise that he will be returning back with the Aruana fish. During the hunting, the king has accidently fell down the river and died tragically. At the same time, the queen got injured while doing her sewing and she had bad feelings about it. After several days, the queen still waited patiently for her husband to come back. She become anxious. Suddenly the queen thought that her husband might be lost and went out of the castle to search for him. She wandered anxiously for days through fields and forests all across the region, but couldn't find him. However, the queen didn't give up and walked and walked until she could walk no more. Then she realized that her husband had abandoned her. She was very upset. She took off her ring and threw it far away, so that it landed at Nong Waen. At that point the queen was so exhausted. She fell down on her back with her head towards Doi Tung and her feet pointing at Doi Mae Salong. Looking at the sky she cried bitterly, finally dying of despair and a broken heart. After her death the queen's ghost grew to a huge size and was covered by the surrounding earth, taking the shape of a sleeping lady (Nang Non; นางนอน) with her face looking skywards. Her belly with her unborn baby inside became separated from her body and was turned into the mountain of Doi Tung.

UFS 211 8th Task

This week task was to retell the movie that we have watched. So, 'Cast Away' was a great movie starred by Tom Hanks (Chuck Noland). He was a FedEx systems engineer. During his plane trip to Malaysia to delivery the FedEx packages, the plane then caught in a horrendous storm and crashes into the Pacific. Chuck was the only survivor from the plane crash and he finds out himself alone on the shores of a tropical island. Initially, frustration gets to him and realizes how little his chances are to ever get back to civilization. But after 4 years being alone in an isolated island away from his beloved girlfriend, Kelly, he then realize he had learned very well how to survive on his own: mending his dental health, catching fish with a spear, predicting the weather with a self-made calendar. When Chuck finally sees his chance he rafts out on the ocean and fortunately is spotted. After a bittersweet welcome-back reception, Chuck finds Kelly has married another man and has children. But he is missing more than her. For all his life his objective was work. For four years, it was survival. Now Chuck is compelled to live. If you asked me if I were the main character and experiencing the same situation like him, most of the time I will cry because I was afraid to be alone. I think I may not be as tough as him to survive in an isolated island. Or maybe will die alone in that island. I do respect his character in that movie. The courage that he own has lead him back to where he belongs. The movie has also taught us nothing is impossible in this life as long as you work hard on it.

UFS 211 6th Task

The common mistakes that I found out I always did in writing mostly more to English grammatical stuff. Sometimes, I find out that the used of English grammar in a sentence is very confusing while writing an essay. Initially, I did think that writing in English was a very difficult task for me since I'm haven't mastered the English language but then after doing more practice in writing English essay and read more people's writing skills, it is not a big problem for me to write an English essay anymore. I used to face problems like the lack of using vocabularies, unable to generate ideas because of the lack of general knowledge or finds out that too much ideas that came across and don't know what to write first while writing essay. So, how do I overcome these problem? Well, I started to read more English source such as reading the English online news and English newspapers in order to increase my general knowledge. Moreover, I also started a new habit which is reading more English books such as novels and story books to improve the used of vocabularies. If you have generate too much ideas while writing essay and didn't know where to start, try to organize them by listing down all the ideas. It really works!

UFS 211 4th Task

There are few stages of 'Writing Process' such as getting ideas, organizing ideas, writing draft, revising, editing, and completing the paragraph. Besides including the stages of 'Writing Process' in your essay, you also have to recognize what are your topic sentences, supporting sentences and concluding sentences.

Usually, most of the topic sentences are ideas for making a point. For example, this text:

Eun Hee and I met in high school. When I left Korea, she cried. Eun Hee works at General Hospital, and she is never absent from work. She likes to take care of the patients, but she doesn’t like the doctors. She says they don’t respect the nurses. One doctor always shouts at the nurses. On the weekends, she goes to the mountains or visits an interesting place. Eun Hee is very active. If there is something that she wants to do, she does it. She is cheerful and talkative. When I had a long face and was sad, she talked cheerfully to me. Eun Hee is tall and very thin. She has small, brown eyes and long, curly dark brown hair. She looks like Olive Oyl in the Popeye cartoons. Olive Oyl is Popeye’s girlfriend. Sometimes, when my friends and I were serious , she told jokes to us. I love her, and I want to see her again soon.

The topic sentence or point for this text is Eun Hee and I met in high school.
It is to decide what you want to say to support your topic based on your reaction to the text.

Every topic sentence must have supporting sentence in order to support your main topic or give more information about your main topic. So, the supporting sentence or information for this text are When I left Korea, she cried.

Last but not least, every paragraph must have a concluding sentence. A concluding sentence is to explain the readers about the main ideas and enable them to understand more clearly. The concluding sentence for this text is I love her, and I want to see her again soon.

Well, there are six stages of writing a good essay such as getting ideas, organizing ideas, writing draft, revising, editing and completing the paragraph.

The 1st stage of writing process is getting ideas. Getting or gaining ideas can be done by doing some prewriting activities, free writing, listing, mind mapping and bubbling in order to get the main idea of your essay. The 2nd stage of writing process is organizing ideas. UFS 211 1st Task

Today's topic is about what is love to you? Some people might say that love is killing. Some of them might think that love is blind. But for me, love is universe. Love is a kind of emotion and it's a gift from God to every living thing in this world. Yes, people might say that love is killing or love is blind because they may have experienced it themselves. But for my opinion, love is a special gift from God and a wonderful thing if they know how to appreciate it. When we talked about love, most of the people will automatically think that it is about the feelings that rise among human being towards their opposite sex. No. That is not true. Like I mention just now, love is universe. It could be rise between you and your girlfriend or boyfriend or it could be rise between you and your friends or even between you and your family members! Love is not completely refers to the passionate desire and intimacy of romantic love or sexual love of Eros, but it is also to express the emotional closeness of familial love and platonic love that defines friendship.  So, do appreciate this lovely feeling as it may bring peaceful to all of us.

UFS 201 - 5th Reflection

It's been the 7th week of English class. Almost comes to the end of English class for this semester. Well, there were still no Grammar test for today's class due to some technician problem according to Madam Atee so we just proceed to the ghost story telling presentation. As the lucky number 1 group, we all had planned on how to present the ghost story telling smoothly but when it comes to the real one, things went not that smooth according to what we've planned earlier. It's a normal thing when you started to get panic and nervous when you're in front of the audience, same goes to me and my group members. We did a little mistake during the presentation but still we manage to cover it up. Well done to all of my group members ( Mary Jane-the group leader, Latiah, Aileen & Dzulnisham ) Proud to have you guys as a team :) So, 1 heavy presentation has down, 2 more to go- the Awareness Commercial and Twisted Fairy Tales Musical Comedy. Hopefully we can still maintain our good cooperation in order to achieve the best result. All the best guys! Well, I guess this will be my last reflection so, I hope I can score good marks for this subject same like my previous English subjects. :) Bye for now!

Since Madam Atee has given me the permission to write about our fashion show rehearsal things, so, let's get started, shall we? :) Well, the fashion show rehearsal was supposed to start at 10 o'clock in the morning but since most of the models were not around, we then have to wait for another 20 minutes. We couldn't make the full rehearsal due to some of the models were not around so we just make the simple one. I was in charge to be the deejay on the fashion show day. I felt lucky because I wasn't been chosen to be one of those backstage crews because I've been that place before. I bet during the rehearsal, the backstage crews were very murky to dress up the models. Well, all I can say is good luck for them for this coming fashion show. Haha! I guess that's all I can shared for today's reflection. Till then.

Hello again. So, this is the first reflection that we have to do for our first English for Specific Purpose class. I've learned some new idioms from today's lesson such as caught red-handed, it is raining cats and dogs, my lips are sealed and many more. How do I feel about the lesson today? Let's see. I was quite enjoyed with today's lesson because there are some class activities that been held in today's class so it makes me feel more interesting to participate in today's lesson instead of copying all the notes that screened. Our lecturer also told us to write the ending of  'A thousand words ' after watching this short movie. Well, to be honest, one of my biggest dream is to enter a local university to further my study. I've tried my best applying any of the local university since I graduate form 5 but I didn't make it. My STPM's result was not bad but still I can't make it to enter any of the local university. I was very frustrated and almost giving up in achieving my dream. 8th Reflection

Based on a paper given, our lecturer had told us to decide which type of learners we are and give advice to ourselves on how to improve our learning. After reading the paper, I would probably think that I am 'The Boffin' type of learner. So, the advice that I could give to myself is don't just rely on the facts and figures too much. Sometimes, there are question that provides no facts or figures. For example like solving Mathematics question. We can't find any good facts or figures while solving Mathematics question. We have to learn and remember the formula of solving it. Although 'The Boffin' learners are the Mastermind winners but still they have to use their logically thinking while answering or even solving questions. So, I should be a bit more like 'The Builder' whereas I should learn things step by step and a little bit like 'The Bakers' whereas sometimes I have to use my logical thinking to solve any question instead of collecting facts and figures. :)

6th Reflection

Hello again! Okay, in this 6th reflection, our lecturer had given us a topic about giving comments about the latest movie that we have watched. So, the latest movie I have watched recently was Alice in The Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton. Well, honestly I love that movie a lot. Although it was some kind of fairy tale story or even a bed time story but seriously you can't even imagine it when these kind of story came to live. I become more excited when the casting of the movie been reveal whereas Johnny Depp, that is my favourite actor was also selected to act in this movie. This movie was all about fantasy whereas you'll see so many unusual things like there's cake when you eat it, you're size will suddenly grown become bigger than you're usual size, animals can talk, cat can fly, and even get to meet so many weird people in the place called Wonderland. To me, this movie was totally awesome! The director has successfully bring this bed time story comes to live. I hope that next time, there will be more movies that has the same level like this movie will be screened in local cinema. :D

5th Reflection

If you ask me who would I choose as my best comedian, I would choose Rowan Atkinson as my best comedian. As we all know, Rowan Atkinson was well-known as Mr. Bean because of his sense of humor. The character of Mr. Bean was developed while Atkinson was studying for his master's degree at Oxford University. Why do I prefer him as my best comedian? It's because of his sense of humor. He doesn't have to talk much to make people laugh. His expression and the silent character's physical comedy was enough to make people who watch his series shriek. Besides, I was already familiar with every of his series since I was a kid. He never felt ashamed of making fun of himself in front of people besides, he had invented a quote that said ' the best medicine is to laugh '. Although he was taking master's degree in a well-known university but he never feels proud and willing to make people around him laugh and feel happy. That's why I prefer him as my best international comedian.

4th Reflection

The message in the ' Life Without Limitation ' clip by Nick Vujicic is about how disability people can also live like normal people did. Nick Vujicic was born without arms and legs but it doesn't inhibited him doing things that he likes. What makes him different from us? Is it because of he doesn't own any arms and legs and that is why he looks different from us? NO! What makes him different or should I said special is because of the strong spirit that he own. We lived as a normal people always complain and unappreciated about what we have. Although Nick Vujicic was born abnormal but still he manage to live happily like normal people did. The clip actually had inspired me a lot. What makes me inspired him a lot is because of the strong spirit that he own. He never gives up easily although he had failed for so many time. So, if he can do things and live happily like normal people did, then why can't we? Change the way that we think and always think positively instead of saying ' I can't '. Be thankful for what we had now. :)

3rd Reflection

After watching the short clips on 2 famous lost world ( Machu Picchu and Chichen Itza ), there are 3 similarities that I had noticed in these two lost world. The first one is both cities are ancient stone architecture.  But in Chichen Itza, there were fine carvings on the stone unlike in Machu Picchu wheres there only stack of stone. The second similarities between the two lost world is both cities were abandoned for a long time. This is because of a theory that both cities were ruled by single- minded ruler- ruthless and became too powerful. Machu Picchu and Chichen Itza were two-made wonders of the world. Both were made by the Mayans civilization. The third similarities that I also noticed is that both cities has been colonized by Spanish and both cities also have temple wheres in Chichen Itza, the temple of Sun is still exist and same goes to Machu Picchu.

Things that have pros will always have cons that followed up. Same goes in this case. There were also differences between these two lost world. The first differences between these two lost world is the location. Machu Picchu settled high up on the mountains, while Chichen Itza is located in a vast land a midst lush greenery. The second differences between these two lost world is the way they distribute their water. In Machu Picchu, water were supplied through systematic drain-like water channels while in Chichen Itza, the residents have to get water from a large well that was present near their city. The third differences is sacrifices were practiced in Chichen Itza, but not in Machu Picchu. This can be proven by the presence of a temple-like sacrificing site in Chichen Itza.

2nd Reflection

In this second reflection, our madam had told us to choose an explorer and why did we choose him or her. In this case, I had choose Christopher Columbus as an explorer. As we all know, he was not just only an explorer but also a colonizer and a navigator. He had completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean that led to general European awareness of the American continents in the Western Hemisphere. Why did I choose him as an explorer? This is because he had shown his effort in order to achieve his aim that is to establish permanent settlements in the island of Hispaniola, initiated the process of Spanish colonization, which foreshadowed the general European colonization of the "New World". Although Columbus was not the first European explorer to reach the Americas, but still his voyages led to the first lasting European contact with America, inaugurating a period of European exploration and colonization of foreign lands that lasted for several centuries. His bravery to explore has inspired me a lot. That is why I choose him as an explorer.
